Responsibilities

Tasks

  • Compute dimensions, sizes, shapes and tolerances of workpieces
  • Inspect final products
  • Set up machine tools such as lathes, milling machines and grinders
  • Test prototypes and production tools
  • Verify machined parts for conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments
  • Program CNC machine tools
  • Read and interpret blueprints, maps, drawings and specifications
  • Set up and operate electrical discharge machines (EDM)
  • Lay out, shape and assemble patterns of metal, wood, plastic and other materials from blueprints, models or templates
  • Position, secure, measure and work metal stock or castings to lay out for machining

  • Tool and Die Maker Trade Certification
  • Mould Maker Trade Certification

Experience and specialization

Computer and technology knowledge

  • Mastercam CAD/CAM
  • AutoCAD
  • SolidWorks software

Metal mould-making experience

  • Blow moulds
  • Injection moulds
  • Compression moulds
  • Transfer moulds

Tool and die fabrication experience

  • Gauge blocks
  • Jigs and fixtures
  • Metal cutting, forming or bending dies
  • Compound or progressive transfer dies
  • Forging die
  • Extrusion dies
