Job details
Education: Secondary (high) school graduation certificate. Work setting: Sporting goods manufacturer. Tasks: Draw, lay out and cut master pattern of product. Create pattern size variations from master patterns using computer or drafting instruments. Lay out master pattern on fabric and cut sample pattern. Estimate the amount of material of fabric required to make a product . Examine sketches, samples of articles and specifications of designs to determine number, size and shape of pattern parts and assess the amount of cloth required to make a product. Mark size, identification, style and sewing instructions on sample patterns. Outline parts of patterns on paper and mark patterns to indicate details such as the placement of pockets and pleats on garments, decorative stitching on shoe parts or eyelets on canvas products. Train technicians, assistants, students or interns. Review work order to determine job specifications. Operate sewing machines or sew by hand. Measure or weigh products. Cut fabric or layers of fabric to specifications. Train other workers. Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments.
